The main story
The main game story basically follows steps of a young child of the god Bhaal, the former Lord of murder. You start as a foster-child of Gorion, (supposedly) powerful wizard (and a member of the Harpers as you discover later) in the Candlekeep. It is a great library keeping one of the greatest literal works. And oh, there is also your sister Imoen. A great danger is coming so you are preparing to flee the keep but you are ambushed on the way and Gorion suddenly does not seem to be so powerfull so he is killed. You flee while he is fighting with Imoen following you later. As the city of Baldur’s Gate is closed because of bandit hordes and iron crisis, you can either go directly south or visit the Friendly Arm Inn first. There you can also meet Khalid and Jaheira, your first companions beside Imone. And oh, there is also a first assassin trying to kill you. There will be much more of them coming everywhere you step…
Than you can travel throughout all the areas of Cloud Peaks and level a bit. There are mostly combats avaiting but also one or two sidequests. Sooner or later your ways will cross Beregost where is a nice blacksmith store where you can buy some equippement and have a few things buffed up. Also there are many houses to loot, some more subquests and a new character addition to the game, wild mage Neera. Further in Nashkel you can take the famous Minsc to your party (a good Rashemen Ranger) but sooner or later you have to free his wizard Dynaheir (I personally do not really like her but you either have to take both, none or let her be killed, it has no effect on the further gameplay). Finally you arrive to Nashkel mines only to clean it from kobolds and their master whose purpose was to destroy its iron production and poison the iron which is succesfully mined.
This draws the attention of the Flaming fist (group of soldiers keeping order) which wants you to investigate bandit camps among the road to Baldur’s Gate. And offer you reward for each bandit scalp you get. After you kill most of them you learn that the troublemaker who hired them is the Iron Throne, a mercenary organisation from Baldur’s Gate. They re-opened the old iron mine in the Cloakwood and enslave people to mine there. After cleaning it, freeing the slaves and destroing the mines you can finally proceed to the Baldur’s Gate.
There you learn than competition mercenary guild has been taken over by dopplegängers (dangerous beasts capable of shapeshifting) and after infiltrating the Iron Throne, you discover all evidence has been taken back to Candlekeep by its leader. So you return to the Candlekeep only ambushed by dopplegängers again and imprisoned, falsely alleged of the murder of the Iron Throne leader. When you escape and return back to Baldur’s Gate, you are further accused of killing one of the Grand Dukes (city leaders), poisoning the Flaming Fist leader and actually causing the iron troubles. Here you will make a great use of the sewers as Flaming Fist is after you and by killing them you loose great amount of reputation.
After cleaning the Flaming Fist and saving its leader (another Grand Duke), getting the evidence of all the plans and murder of the other Duke and former Iron Throne leader, you learn that the Sarevok is the cause of everything, also killing both Gorion and his own foster father (former leader of the Iron Throne). Sarevok was trying to become replacement Grand Duke and provoke war with Amn. He is another child of Bhaal and by provoking great masacre, he thought he would claim his power. But you stop him during the naming ceremony so he flees. You than proceed to an ancient Bhaals temple where you finally kill him in a great battle.
