Cooler Master RS-460-PCAR-A3 460W Review

First Look

These units often come bundled with Cooler Master cases and are sold separately as the Extreme Power Plus 460W. Are they any good? Or should you purchase your next Cooler Master case without a power supply and use a better one? I intend to find out.

The unit itself is a semi-gloss black colour which looks good until you touch it and leave finger prints all over it. According to the label, it has two 12V rails. One powers the CPU and the other powers everything else. I can’t help but point out the Engrish at the bottom of the label:

“As sealed stick was removed, lost or damaged,it shall be out of warranty validity!”

What are they talking about? I never lost or damaged any sealed stick. Besides, even if I do lose the sealed stick, I can always just break a replacement off a tree.

The UL number (E131875) points to AcBel Polytech at the UL database.

The connectors consist of a 20+4 pin ATX connector, a 4+4 pin ATX/EPS12V connector, a 6-pin PCIe connector, four SATA connectors, five molex/peripheral connectors and an FDD connector. The wires used are mostly 20AWG, which is fine for the PCIe connector, but thinner than recommended for the others. The only connector with thicker wires is the CPU connector, where they are 18AWG. Note that a higher AWG number actually means thinner wires.

The fan grille is the usual wire type, which generally allows for much more airflow than punched out grilles. Note the sheet of plastic which prevents air from going straight out the back of the power supply. Since this unit doesn’t have APFC, there is a voltage selector just above the IEC power inlet.
