So…what's been cooking?

Only 5 days to go until el-cheapo PSU round-up #4…

So I know about that HPS thing with the dangerous fake PPFC implementation, and the A-Power — but what else is there? I'm curious if you've found anything actually decent this time (aside from the MPT-301 I sent off which was so close to acceptable, but too outdated to use in a new PC). Or have they just found more creative ways to make even scarier abominations?

Lil' teaser...

I have tightened the scoring rules a bit since last year, so I'm a bit more harsh on voltage regulation and dated designs than I have been in years past.

The macron was the best, tied with one other PSU. It had the advantage of being 12V heavy and much better voltage regulation compared to the macron, but it was over rated.

That must have been one hell of a kaboom. :D

So I guess most of the rest of the contenders are Fail Award winners?

Yes, on both fronts. That was a pretty impressive fireworks display, and yes, we have plenty of fail awards.

You can wait one more day. The roundup will be auto published tomorrow. I can't log in to read or edit the article now as I am away on holiday and only have my ageing thinkpad tablet (Nvidia Tegra II 1GHz dual core), which is too slow for such a big post. Chrome freezes up and crashes if I try.

I'll take over this thread if nobody has a problem with that :D

I've been on CeBIT last week and got a nice chat with ppl from XFX, Be Quiet!, Chieftec, Fractal Design, Seasonic and not so nice chat, but still some contact for LC-Power, Enermax and Thermaltake. Will make some short report and as soon as I finish my review quota, start ordering new samples :D

I am especially looking forward to that passive 550W Enermax unit…
