I think nVidia applies the abnormal PCI-E aux power connectors because it would stand in the way of the reference cooler if they put a 6pin connector on the left of the stacked power connectors (where 6 holes were already made).

Don't question your eyes. They are two pictures from two different sources.

I actually think it's a brilliant idea to make the power connector that way. It is easy for manufacturers to put more power connectors on one board without extending the length of it. And PSU manufacturers're gonna love it.
