Power Supply Build Quality Pictorial/Discussion

Postby duckula » March 28th, 2011, 5:57 am

Note: This thread was originally posted on CPSRF by shovenose. ;) And this is one of my favourite threads. Since shove doesn't have time to transport it from CPSRF to here, I think perhaps I can do it for him.:D

Please post pictures of PSU innards here.

I'll start with a PCB shot of the Seventeam ST-650PWL power supply to show you just how ugly can a PCB be! Read the full review here, if you fancy. This is the same platforum as the coolermaster GX650.
Please feel free to point out any mistakes in my messages. That will be helpful for me to make less mistakes in the future. :-)
Any help will be appreciated.:thnx:

Antec's planning on replacing BP series with VP series and they just added a new model into their VP line-up. Yep, it's Delta (the Delta mark on its transformer is a giveaway) again and currently it is listed on 360buy (an equivalent of Newegg in China) for RMB269 yuan(approximately US$41). It's 230VAC only.

LTEC Caps... Antec just won't learn their lesson

:rapidfire: antec (as Duckula predicted)

btw, the soldering on that seventeam looks a lot like my soldering.
No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the coils backwards! :D

So you are on par with Seventeam in term of soldering. :D

Vantec Ion2+ 620W. looks a bit like an old school half bridge design with that big grounding wire coming from the transformer. The caps are all panny FC, although that's because I recapped it. originals were a mix of Jun Fu and el-cheapo teapo. Not sure, but I think Andyson is the OEM

It was powering my main rig untill it failed and was replaced with my re-built rexpower 400W and later an In Win power man 600W (80+ Bronze with apfc)

Are you gonna either fix it or reuse the caps?
It looks decent, but the heatsinks remind me of a raidmax!

FSP Aurum 500W power supply. at the secondary heatsink. There's one good capacitor (primary cap, hitachi) with a bunch of junks caps. (the rest except the primay one. Crapxcon). The main topology used on/in (help me decide which preprosition I should use, thanks:D) this unit is Active Clamp Forward.

Antec SU-380. Removed from a Solution series case with bad caps (Only Some Trash) and recapped with panny FC. Some of you may recognise this from CPSRF, but since I re-capped it, I can't accurately test the ripple. OEM is seasonic. It has beefy heatsinks and good silicon, but let down by the caps and the death ADDA.
