Linkworld Stability Power LPJ9-25 420 W review

Connectors & cabling

The cabling is interesting. As it is +5 V heavy unit, the wires in Main ATX for this rail are 18AWG. The others including SATA and molex are 20AWG. Some of the wires which conduct small currents (PWR On, Berg) are 22AWG. Funny thing about the SATA here. Once again I repeat the standard is totally idiotic that it implemented +3.3 V rail in it. That hardly ever found any use and now, after many years, there is slight with some mSATA SSDs. Most bigger hard drives did not need +3.3 V ever as they also had to work with molex-SATA adapters. Plus such voltage is of no use and you need DC–DC module anyway (so it is also more effective to supply it with +5 or +12 V).

So to cheap it out, Linkworld decided to just skip the +3.3 V and only carry +5 and +12 V. This is really something because even that the standard is stupid and +3.3 V is useless there, the standard says it must be in the connector. So all the other units I have ever seen had it in there. Until Linkworld came around . Actually, the SilentiumPC Elementum SI-350 we reviewed last time also lacks it in one connector, but that unit is younger, Linkworld was first.

In total, we have:

  • 1× Main ATX (20+4pin): 32 cm
  • 1× ATX 12 V (4pin): 38 cm
  • 3× SATA: 1× 34 cm, 1× 49 cm, 1× 50 cm
  • 2× peripheral molex: 1× 33 cm, 1× 65 cm
  • 1× Berg for FDD: 66 cm

Casing & cooling

The metal chassis of the LPJ9-25 consists of 0.7mm SECC steel which does not seem to have any finish. It feels very cheap and as you can see, the two pieces do not fit very well. The screws barely hold, after removing them a couple of times some cannot be tightened anymore.

The front side has the ordinary crappy grille with just a few holes punched into the metal. But as you can see there is still almost more metal than the air vents. These are usually very noisy too. Linkworld actually included 4 fan screws, oh yay. It was not so uncommon for similar units to cheap it out to only two screws back in the day. The back side only has a couple more vents to suck the air. This unit won’t cool itself well at all. The cables coming out of the unit have no protective bushing, but the metal is folded over so there are no sharp edges at least.

The fan is 8cm with sleeve bearing, model DF082512SEM. The generic brand is supposedly named Fonsoning, that is all I found, there are no specs anywhere.
