First Look
Shaw is an in-house brand for MSY – a fairly well known Australian computer retailer. Many of their power supplies have been re-badged A-Power products, and as a result, they have an extremely poor reputation for quality. In fact the last power supply I tested from this brand blew up at only 50% load. Today, though, we’re looking at one of their most expensive power supplies – the PSUSH80PGOLD850. In spite of the 850 in the model, this is actually a 650W product. Now let’s see if it is worth the $94 that MSY currently sells it for, or if it’s just as much of a fraud as the P4-S860V.
As is usually the case with products that use DC-DC conversion for the 5V and 3.3V rail, this power supply looks to be capable of nearly the entire 650W on the 12V rail alone. Speaking of 12V rails, this power supply only has one; on a 650W unit, we would prefer to see at least two for safety (to reduce the risk of a partial short resulting in burned wires). The power supply itself is matte black – my preferred colour.
The connectors consist of a 20+4 pin ATX connector, a 4+4 pin ATX/EPS12V connector, four PCI Express power connectors (two 6+2 pin and two 6-pin only connectors), six SATA power connectors, three Molex connectors and one FDD power connector. This configuration isn’t too bad for a 650W power supply.
For ventilation, we have the usual wire fan grille with a honeycomb rear-grille.
