The Ultimate Linux Roundup – Round 1

Kubuntu 11.10 (32-bit)

Introduction:

Kubuntu is the only distro in this round of the round-up that uses the KDE GUI (user interface). KDE is meant to look very slick and be a middle-of-the-road segway from Windows to Linux. While it has beautiful effects, it is a bit of a resource hog…

Review:

As mentioned above, KDE has a very slick GUI. Everything is shiny, has smooth effects, and it’s a bit of a Windows imitation. Now, I’m not saying that’s a bad thing (in fact I think it’s a great interface), but I prefer the Gnome interface simply for performance reasons.

The installation was slightly faster than Ubuntu (even though it’s being done on a slightly slower computer).

Score:

Installation speed: 9/10

General speed: 8.5/10

Interface: 9/10

Useability: 8/10

Features: 8.5/10

Overall score: 8.6/10

Conclusion:

If you prefer KDE or you’ve got some extra computing power, and/or you’re used to windows and you don’t want too much of a culture shock, Kubuntu is a good choice.
