CentOS 6 (64-bit)
Introduction:
CentOS, aka Community Enterprise Operating System, is a Linux distro aimed at corporate users or those who want stability and reliability instead of the cutting edge of technologies. It’s also a very good server OS. Let’s see how it does.
Review:
Instead of a review I’m going to tell you a story. Here’s the story. So right now at my high school we have a project: we’re replacing Windows XP with Linux on a select machines as a proof of concept, and once we can prove to the administration that it’s good, we plan to roll it out on the large scale. Now, I was trying to use Ubuntu 11.10, but after finding out what a pain it was to get Ubuntu to work with the Windows Domain, and how slowly and glitchily (is that a word?) Ubuntu’s Unity interface performed on Pentium 4 PCs with 512MB of RAM and Intel graphics, I was getting a little bit frustrated. So I get home and I’m installing CentOS to test for this review and…BINGO! Hidden in the installer I find a option “Use Network Login”… and guess what, CentOS has built in support for joining domains! Anyway, I’m extremely pleased and this is yet another reason you should use CentOS, my favorite operating system! Damn it, you weren’t supposed to know that until the end…
Now, CentOS has no fancy Unity interface or Ubuntu Software Center 5.0, but it’s one hell of an OS that’s perfect for corporate and education evironments…
