Aywun Megapower A1-550-Elite 550W Power Supply Review

First Look

Aywun is a little known brand that seems to be exclusive to Australia. I’ve previously seen a few of their low end products, the classic series, which turned out to be no better than many of the power supplies in our el-cheapo power supply round up. This time, though, we’re looking at one of Aywun’s higher end products, the Megapower Elite 550. Like most other Megapowers, this model is 80 PLUS certified.

The label claims that this power supply has two 12V rails. In reality, however, this is a single rail unit. As we will see later, this power supply lacks OCP, which is required to separate the 12V rails.

The power supply is a semi-gloss dark grey colour. It looks attractive, and unlike most glossy finishes, fingerprints hardly show up.

The Megapower Elite 550’s cable configuration is OK, but could be a bit better. There are four SATA power connectors, four molex/peripheral connectors, one FDD connector, two 6 pin PCIe power connectors, a 20+4 pin ATX connector, and a 4+4 pin ATX/EPS12V CPU connector. A few extra SATA connectors and at least one 8 pin PCIe connector would have been nice. It would have also been preferable to split the SATA connectors across two chains, because this would allow for one chain to go to the top of the case for optical drives, while another could go to the hard drive bays. The cables are all sleeved, and the wires are all 18AWG, which is the correct gauge to be used.

The fan is a 135mm, and has a golf ball-like surface on the blades, which supposedly increases its airflow. Both grilles are very open, with a wire grille being used on the intake, and a honeycomb-style grille being used on the back.
