Poly-Modding: Does it actually work?

XpertVision 7300GT

The Original Capacitors

Unlike the Inno3D 7300GT, this card came with Rubycon capacitors, and all of them look OK. The fan, however had failed, so I replaced the cooler with a passive one. The problem with this is that it touches the capacitors. Rubycon capacitors are fairly heat tolerant, but touching a hot passive heat sink isn’t going to do them any favour. Polymer capacitors should handle it better. In the way of values, there are five 1500µF 6.3V, four 470µF 16V and three 1000µF 6.3V capacitors.

The replacement capacitors

The card is screened for 10mm capacitors on three of the four 470µF 16V capacitors. Those three were replaced with 330µF 16V Sanyo SEP polymers, while the remaining one was replaced by a Fujitsu RE 330µF 16V. The 1500μF and 1000μF capacitors were replaced by 820µF 6.3V Nichicon FPCAP L5 and 560µF 6.3V Chemi-Con PSC capacitors respectively.
