The Ultimate Linux Roundup – Round 1

Lubuntu 11.10 (32-bit)

Introduction:

Lubuntu is Ubuntu with the LXDE interface. It’s supposedly lighter to install and less of a resource hog.

Review:

Lubuntu was indeed slightly faster to install. Additionally, there was significantly less RAM being used when idle than on Ubuntu’s Unity interface. Unfortunately, Lubuntu left several things out that should have been built in (for example a screenshot tool, meaning we had to make photos instead of screenshots)…

Score:

Installation speed: 9/10

General speed: 8/10

Interface: 8/10

Useability: 8/10

Features: 6/10

Overall score: 7.8

Conclusion:

If you have limited RAM (memory) or a weak graphics subsystem on your comptuter, give Lubuntu a spin. Otherwise, if you’re looking for a shiny interface with all the latest features and smooth effects, choose Ubuntu or another distro.
